Universal Pictures International
Universal Pictures International (UPI) is the international theatrical division of Universal Pictures, headquartered in London and headed up by President, David Kosse.
UPI set up its own operation in January 2007 following the dissolution of the distribution agreement with United International Pictures, a Joint Venture (JV) with Paramount Pictures. It now owns and operates direct theatrical marketing and distribution of feature films in many locations around the globe including Austria, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and UK & Eire. In other territories UPI market and distribute movies through its JV offices, as well as in select territories, licensees who are contracted to distribute on UPI’s behalf.
Since UPI was set up it has enjoyed significant international box office success with films such as Mamma Mia! which so far has topped $461M at the box office, as well as, the Bourne Trilogy, Mummy 1, 2 & 3, the Fast and Furious franchise, Inglorious Basterds (an acquisition which to date has been the biggest Tarantino film internationally), and more recently in 2010, Robin Hood and in 3D animation, Despicable Me.
UPI is expanding its reach through local production and acquisitions in the international arena with films such as Heartbreaker, Black Lightning and Tropa De Elite. UPI also released Working Title films such as Mr Beans Holiday, Hot Fuzz, Atonement and Nanny McPhee and work closely with Focus Features International.
